Learn how to clean out an unruly hall, bedroom, or bathroom closet and keep it organized for a long time. Follow these four steps to absolute closet organization.

The notion of tackling the challenge of tidying up any messy closet may seem equally alluring and impossible. However, long-term organization can be attained by following four simple steps; producing an orderly closet that will be easy to maintain for years.

Review and Release

The first step one must take is to empty the entire space while sorting the contents into three piles:

  • necessary
  • donate
  • discard

One may come across old clothes or discover other items that he or she hasn’t seen in years. As a general rule of thumb; people aren't likely to reuse anything that they haven't used or worn in the past 12 months. Therefore, one must allow themselves to graciously let go of these items. Generously donate any thing that is still in working or wearable condition.

Categorize

Sort the contents of the Necessary pile into categories. Each of these categories will correspond to a new container in the future perfectly organized closet, so don’t be too general. If possible, make categories that correspond to specific activities, like art and sports. Identify individual supplies for each, like Paint & Crayons or Pool Goggles & Sunscreen. This way, you will only need to remove one or two containers when completing a certain activity.

Contain

Buy clear stackable bins and boxes to hold your newly categorized possessions. Each container should be compact enough to fit into the closet. Label the contents with the categorical name you had previously assigned to it during initial organization. Strategically pack each of the piles into a separate container before putting anything into the closet. It is important the have all of the contents of the closet packed into containers before placing anything in the closet because it prevents immediate disorganization.

Deposit

Work from the top of the closet down to the floor. A high storage shelf is the smartest place to store the bins with contents that are seldom used by people in the household. If you decide to stack multiple containers on the bottom of the floor, make sure the ones that are used most are easily accessible on the top of the stacks. Heavy items should be stored near to the floor so they won't have to be moved out of the way often or cause a collapse.

Maintenance is the key to keeping a space organized, so get into the habit of putting items back into their respective containers. If the categorized bins are activity-specific enough, then you are more likely to return each container after use.
