Rubbermaid Configurations Closet Kits ReviewConfigurations Kits are a Great Way to Organize Your Closet Space
Within the space of a few hours, you can discover the full potential of your clothing storage space using a Rubbermaid Configurations Closet Kit.
Utilizing an organization system for your clothes closet can save you time, money and provide a fresh perspective on your clothes by allowing you to see more of your wardrobe at a glance. For the average shopper, price can be the defining point in selecting a system. For the budget conscious, Rubbermaid Configurations Custom Closet Kits strike a perfect balance between durability, style and price. Installing a Rubbermaid Configurations Closet KitRubbermaid Configuration Closet kits are modular storage systems that utilize a track rail and hanging uprights method. This method lessens the amount of holes in the wall by installing a track rail on the back wall of the closet and hanging the uprights from the rail. Shelves and clothing rods are all attached to the uprights via brackets. Proper anchoring and installation allow the system to distribute the weight evenly. Configuration kits come in two sizes: 3' - 6' foot kits and 4' - 8' foot kits. Both kits can be customized to fit closets within the designated ranges. The kits are offered in two finishes: basic white and “titanium” which is actually a satin-nickel finish. The most difficult part of installation is installing the top track rail. It is imperative that this rail be properly anchored to either studs within the wall or using the heavy-duty plastic anchors that come with the kit. The recommended 3/8 drill bit for the Configurations kits are spot-on (for sheetrock) and the anchors slip easily into the holes and can be activated using the anchor key also provided with the kit. Once the top rail is installed, the hanging uprights slide easily into place. The uprights need to be anchored to the wall as well using a single screw at the bottom and then you are ready to begin the configuring process! Hanging rods and shelves slide easily into place using the sturdy locking brackets that are provided. Rubbermaid’s Configuration line offers limited components that can be purchased separately and added on to the kit. Extra shelves, wire baskets, a tie and belt organizer and a pant rack are a few components that can easily be added on for extra utility. The overall look of the Configuration Custom Closet Kit may not be as stylish as the more expensive Elfa line from the Container Store but in terms of price and durability, it is an easy trade. The Titanium finish does however, have a sleek, urban feel to it that might actually be preferable to many users. Problems With Rubbermaid Configuration Closet KitsThe Configurations line does have a few drawbacks that make it a less than perfect system. Problem areas include spacing of the uprights, confusing anchor design and flimsy clothing rod supports. The vertical supports or “uprights” are spaced 22” apart making it impossible to anchor all of them into studs. While the kit supplies just enough anchors to overcome this problem it leaves little room for error. The anchors, at first glance, can be difficult to open due to confusing pictures and poor wording located in the instructions. If one anchor is damaged, it could result in an unplanned trip to the hardware store. The supplied anchors work with basic sheetrock walls only. Homeowners with concrete plaster or steel walls must purchase different anchors at a home improvement store. The supports used to hang clothing rods are another weak spot in the design. Constructed of both plastic and metal, they are a flimsier and lighter weight version than what you would get from the Container Store’s Elfa line. Each kit also includes several plastic top rail covers in various sizes that are used to give the system a finished look. The instructions state that the rail covers may be cut with scissors in order to fit the design of the closet. However, the rail covers are far too thick to be cut with a pair of heavy duty scissors. While durability is a key factor, here it becomes a handicap. An Affordable Way to Organize a ClosetThe Rubbermaid Configurations Custom Closet Kit is a great organizer at a reasonable price. The price range of a Configurations system can run anywhere from $85 to $165 depending on the style and size of the kit. For those wishing to create an organized space that fits their needs without breaking the bank, this is the perfect middle ground.
