Home Organizer Solutions to Get a Home Organized

Oct 4, 2009 Jeremy Glennon

Getting your home organized can be an overwhelming task. Here is a general breakdown for organizing your home in steps.

The logic of how to organize a home is pretty straightforward, but the actual action of organizing the home is usually the problem. However, if home organization is broken down into steps, it can become doable. Organizing your home consist of just a few things:

  1. Don't bring extra stuff into the house.
  2. Don't keep extra stuff in the house.
  3. Make sure everything has a place to go.
  4. Use good habits and routines to maintain.

However, these are just words. It is easy to say and often extremely difficult to do. If it was easy, having clutter and being disorganized wouldn't be common issues that exist.

As with all things that at first seems to be overwhelming, breaking the project into smaller tasks is a great way to begin. Most likely there isn't the luxury of having a professional organizer and a team assisting, like on the Hoarders TV Show.

Don't Bring Home Extra Stuff

At least while the goal is to get organized, and hopefully when the goal is to stay organized, bring as little into the home as possible. Before shopping, anywhere, take the time to write a list of everything that is needed, and then don't divert.

It's Easier to Organize Your Home If There's Less Stuff In It

Go room-by-room and purge everything that is not used. Within a room, pick one section at a time, like a drawer, and donate or throw away anything that has not been used in the last twelve months. It may take months to do this, but as long as this is being done in combination with no new items coming into the house, then a huge step for organizing your home is being accomplished.

Make Sure Everything is Organized In Its Own Home

Once a section is purged, a home organizer product can be used to keep the section organized. Section-by-section and room-by-room, these areas can be purged and then organized this way. When choosing an organizer, look for items that will coral and contain the sections, like drawer organizers and shelf dividers. Then label these divided sections, within the shelf or in the drawer for example, to make these sections "official homes" for named items.

Stay Organized With Good Organizing Habits and Routines

Now that everything is organized (even before it is organized), it is important to stop messes and chaos from forming in the first place. Read How to Stay Organized for tips and advice to keep things in order.
