Working out of home can have its advantages. One of them is having a home office. Here are ideas on how to organize it and create a space for working effectively.

Getting work done is much easier and quicker if the workspace is neat, clean and well-organized. A home office, big or small, needs to be orderly and systematically set up so that productive work can be done. Piles of paper, bundles of magazines, an overflowing box of office supplies are all signs that call of immediate home office organizing. So get started with these simple and easy to do ideas to bring some order to the home-based workspace.

Getting Rid of Clutter

The first thing to do is to get rid of all the clutter. Unused and unnecessary office supplies, overflowing paper trays, magazines and newspapers or just stuff that belongs elsewhere should all be removed and either trashed or put back in their proper places. Be meticulous and ruthless in dealing with clutter. It has a way of creeping up and accumulating, so ensure that anything that does not need to be used for work, should go.

Organize the Desk Drawer and Filing Cabinets

The desk drawer and the filing cabinets are areas that tend to get used the most and that is the reason, they are also areas of great chaos and confusion. This particular step may take some time but it would be worth it. Take out all the contents of the desk drawer. Trash or discard anything that is broken, spoilt or not needed.

Invest in an organizer tray for desk drawer, available at most office supplies stores, and use it to hold important and needed items. It would keep things sorted and help the drawer look neat and clean. Office supplies, such as, pens, pencils, stapler pins, paper clips, post-it notes and other stationery items can all go into separate compartments.

Filing cabinets, on the other hand, would require a thorough weeding and so would also need more time. Go through all the files, shred any papers that are no longer needed and file loose and incorrectly filed papers in their proper places. Reuse and re-label the old file folders according to their new contents. Keep a drawer for files that may be needed but don’t require immediate access.

Organize the Message Board

Most home offices have a bulletin or message board. Although, it is to be used to pin important dates, events and appointments, it usually gets transformed into a hold-all for all kinds of paper clutter. An essential part of home office organizing would be organizing the bulletin board. Remove everything that has been pinned onto it and put back only a scheduler and important and current work-related details.

Add Color and Soft Furnishings

Another important part of organizing the home office involves transforming it into a place that one would want to work in. so bring in some color and liveliness by adding flowers, soft cushions, a bright painting, a throw or a nice rug. Remember to keep the mood professional but not boring and personal but not frivolous.

Organizing a home office may seem challenging and tough; however, these simple steps make it easy and fun to create a positive and productive workspace. A small home office needs to be just as organized as a big corporate office. So, use these ideas and get ready to work in a great environment.
