Whether it is creating space for Christmas decorations or a dedicated tool storage area or simply to be able to park the car, here are ideas to organize garage storage.

The garage is quite a popular storage area, and garages are often stuffed with cartons of all shapes and sizes, with equipment and tools adding to the clutter, plus a car and sometimes a couple of bicycles. However, just like any other room, a garage can be organized to maximize space and look great as well. Get started by using the garage storage ideas given below to bring about a complete makeover.

Empty Out the Garage

The first step is probably, the toughest. Empty out the garage completely. Remove all the boxes, cartons, loose items, tools, everything that occupies any space. Strip the shelves and the floor bare of all their contents. Once it is completely emptied out, it would be easy to see the space available and the space needed. There are plenty of garage organization systems available in the market that could be put to good use to increase storage area and maximize space.

Decide on a Garage Organization System

While deciding on a garage organization system, it is important to keep in mind the kind of space you want and the amount of space you have. In other words, if your garage is to function as a car parking area as well as a workshop, you would want to keep a lot of floor space free. Therefore, it would be a good idea to go in for wall mounted shelves or cabinets, sliding storage and ceiling storage systems.

Go Through All the Stored Stuff

Before beginning to put back all the stuff into the newly organized garage, it is important to weed out the non-essential and useless stuff that everyone tends to accumulate over the years. So spend some time going through everything and discarding anything that hasn’t been used, is broken, cannot be fixed or is simply, not needed. Hold a garage sale for them later.

Sort and Organize

This is an important part of giving the garage a makeover. Ensure that everything has a designated space. So, organize stuff into categories and label the boxes and cartons as well as the shelves on which they go. Tool storage should be separate from gym equipment and boxes holding Christmas decorations, Halloween costumes and birthday party decorations can all be stacked together in an area designated for Decorations.

Arrange Everything Back

Once the sorting has been done, it will be easier to arrange everything. Do try to leave a little space free to accommodate anything that may need to be stored later. Use labels and markers to identify spaces for all items and put up an index list indicating what goes where. It would make it easier for everyone in the family to put things where they belong and also find them when needed.

While garage organization may seem daunting but the actual effort involved is quite little. Plus, the benefits of having a great-looking, well organized garage are many. Use these ideas to give yourself an organized and well-kept storage area.
