Christmas tree decorating is supposed to be fun but it can be exasperating. This year, get organized before you start to decorate instead of being annoyed and frustrated.

In many homes on tree decorating day, everyone is standing around, sipping eggnog and nibbling cookies, bored to tears while they watch some poor guy try to adjust the Christmas tree stand and untangle the lights. Don’t worry. The party will perk up as soon as the host gets back from running to the store for replacement light bulbs and bulb hooks.

This year get organized so that decorating leaves you with plenty of Christmas spirit.

Decide ahead on a decorating day. This is important so that you have time to make sure everything is ready.

Get a tree. If purchasing the tree, buy it a few days ahead. Soak the tree, with a freshly cut bottom, in a bucket of water. This will help it get a good drink and stay greener once your bring it inside. If your tree lot did not have a tree shaker, you should give it a good shake outside to make it shed the old needles. You might even want to spray it with a hose. If using an artificial tree, get it out of the attic and make sure you have all the parts.

Prepare the tree. Place the tree in the stand. If it is a real tree, trim the top or branches as needed. It’s a good idea to place a piece of heavy plastic under the stand to protect carpet or flooring from possible leaks or drips. If you have an artificial tree, assemble it now.

Find the decorations. Remove decorations from storage. Check to see if you need to replace any items. Sometimes, the attic heat can melt an item or remove the paint. Mice or moths can do damage as well. Don’t forget to check for the tree topper and the tree skirt.

Untangle the lights. Plug in each cord to make sure it works. Purchase replacement bulbs or new strands as needed. Make sure you have the extension cord you need.

Make it fun. Invite some family or friends. Purchase some eggnog and cookies. Find your some Christmas music.

Double-check your readiness. On Christmas tree decorating day, the tree should be in its stand and placed in the right location. It should be complete ready including having any fallen needles cleaned up. Boxes of decorations should be at hand and the lights should be untangled and ready to go.

Getting organized means everyone has fun on decorating day.
