Children need to have rooms that are not just functional but also well-organized and easy to keep clean. Create a space that kids would love to have and stay in.
The market is buzzing with products to create that perfect room for a child. Special furniture, pretty wallpapers, coordinated linen sets, it is easy to get just about anything you’d need to decorate a child’s room. However, decorating a kid’s room is also, about making space that would serve many functions, be easy to take care of and if possible, keep pace with growing needs and demands. Here are easy ways to make a child’s bedroom functional, organized and nice to look at. Children’s FurnitureFurniture for a child’s bedroom should be sturdy, well-built and able to withstand roughhousing and pillow fights. Pretty and fancy beds that look nice but can’t take wear and tear would only dent the budget and not stand the test of time. Choose furniture with simple, straight lines and in neutral colors since they would be easy to clean and also, would be easy to match and coordinate with. Also, try and invest in furniture that has storage options. Closets with customized organizers would be very useful for a home with more than one child and so would beds and desks with in-built storage options. This would enable the furniture to keep up with growing needs and demands. However, do keep furniture to a minimum to free up floor space for playing, especially, for younger children. Soft FurnishingsCurtains, bed linen, rugs, throws and cushions should all be in a material that is easy to wash, clean and iron. Bright colors liven up surroundings and most children love them. Also, they’re good for hiding sticky finger marks and muddy footprints. Even if using pale pink for a Barbie-themed room, ensure that the fabric is machine washable and can withstand a fair amount of wear and tear. Rugs should be non-skid and preferably of a material that is hypoallergenic and doesn’t gather dust. Storage SystemsA kid’s room needs to be fitted out with a fair amount of storage systems. Stackable boxes for toys, neatly labeled and placed in a corner. Book shelves, a closet with shelves or a bureau for folded clothes are all standard and should be able to grow with increasing needs. If possible, get a bed with a box inside since that can be used to store off-season clothing and other rarely used items. If there are two or more children sharing a room, it would be a good idea to have a row of shelves built around the wall to keep books, school supplies and other stuff. Divide shelves between the children and let them put up their names on it. Closets could be fitted with custom closet organizers which would ensure that they are responsible for keeping the space tidy and also reduces fights over storage space. The same principle can also, be applied to boxes for toys or closet space. Labeling and assigning dedicated space to each child ensures less fights and greater responsibility. Moreover, children learn to put things back where they belong since they can see where everything goes. Put up individual soft boards to pin up cards, photos and artworks and give each a dedicated bin for odds and ends, preventing stuff from flowing all over the place. These are just some ways to make a kid’s room truly kid-friendly and also make it easy to take care of. A little effort in decorating a child’s bedroom with attention to detail and an eye on the future not only makes for a happier child, but a more organized household as well.
