The holidays are the perfect time for an organized home. Holiday organization can ensure stress-free celebrations and a tidy home throughout. Here are tips to get organized for the upcoming celebrations and prepare for holiday shopping, decorating the house, greeting guests and all the little details that make the festive season truly festive.

Start Holiday Organization by Decluttering

The holidays are a great time to get rid of clutter and tidy up the house. However, it is important not to get overwhelmed and exhausted at the end of the cleaning spree. Schedule one day per room to declutter and clean. Ideally, plan to declutter two weeks prior to any major holiday. Tackle difficult areas first and reserve the easier rooms for later. Ideally, avoid getting into heavy-duty cleaning and stick with areas that will be used by guests and visiting family members.

Organize the Holiday Shopping and Greeting Cards Lists

Keeping holiday shopping and greeting card lists organized and ready will make these two important tasks easy and fun. To organize holiday shopping, spend an evening in noting down names of friends and family members and gift ideas for each individual or family. Include a price limit, if needed. If possible, write down the names of the stores or websites from where the respective gifts may be bought. This will make holiday shopping quick and easy.

A list for sending out greeting cards or holiday cards can include names and addresses of everyone who must be sent out a greeting. Making this list will eliminate hunting for names and addresses at the last moment or running out of postage and ensure that cards get sent out on time.

Meal Planning for the Holidays

Spend some time planning for meals during the holidays. If guests are expected, take that into consideration when meal planning. Write down the meal plan for two weeks, put it up on the refrigerator, and use it when shopping for groceries. Do put down any special dishes or baking that needs to be done for the holidays on the meal plan to prevent last-minute rushing around. A few meal planning tips for holiday parties are :

  • Decide on the time to serve a meal and then, plan cooking for it accordingly.
  • Shop for any special ingredients well in advance
  • Hang the meal plan for the party on the refrigerator or in the kitchen. Include all menu items on the meal plan so that nothing is missed on the big day.
  • Plan the table decorations and take out the special cutlery and flatware. Check for missing pieces or chipped items.

Organize Holiday Decorating

Holidays mean decorating the house. Schedule decorating the home for a time when all the family members are together and can be a part of the festivity. Try to get the house decorated about a week or two in advance. Removing the decorations, too, should be a part of the holiday organizing schedule. Pencil in a date on the calendar for holiday decorations to be removed and packed away.

Enjoy the holidays by getting organized and ensuring that everything is taken care of. Do remember that the holidays are a time for the family to have fun and enjoy being together. So use these simple holiday organizing tips to make the celebrations enjoyable and hassle-free.
