Clutter is a big issue with countless solutions. Choose an organization system that works for you.
Cleaning the closet is one of the more difficult areas to remove clutter because of our attachment to clothes and their memories. Often we will hold on to a clothing article because it reminds us of the past. Today, get rid of the past and jump into the present and start planning for the future. Closet TipsTake all clothing items out of the closet and place on your bed. All items even the ones you know you are keeping. Put all clothing items from the shelves on the bed. Place all non clothing items from the closet into a big box. Take a deep breath. Three main questions to ask about your clothes. Does it fit? Does it look good on my body shape? Have I worn it in the past year? If you answered no to any of the 3 questions, it is time to give the clothing item away to charity, sell it or discard it. Do this for all your clothes. This includes underwear, socks, nylons, belts, scarves and pajamas. Be bold and only keep items that look great on you and that you are comfortable wearing. Often I will keep clothes because a friend or family member has given it to me. Even though the blouse is unflattering I feel guilty for giving it away. However, I no longer allow guilt to dictate. Exception: Allowed to keep evening gowns, tuxedos, and suits. Once all of the clothing items have been sorted, it is time to clean the closet. Clean the shelves, floor, and door. Keep the door open to let it breathe for a few hours before you place your clothes back. Return your clothes and organize according to your needs. If you wear business suits more often than track suits, have them at the front of the closet. Miscellaneous ItemsAnything you have not used in the past year, you need to give away or throw away. Label your shoe boxes for easy reference. Place baskets on your shelves to hold miscellaneous items. Keeps things tidy and clean. Clearing out the closet is a difficult task but is worth the effort. Clothing OptionsHave a clothing swap with friends and neighbours Sell your clothing on an online auction site such as eBay Give to a local charity such as battered women’s shelter Sell to a gently used store Cut some of your favourite clothing and create a keepsake blanket Ask local schools if they have a need for winter garments Donate to your church Call an organization such as March of Dimes to donate to a family in need
