Protect and Store China Ware

Nov 4, 2009 Jeremy Glennon

Fine china is usually delicate and special, and therefore needs special care and storage solutions. Here are tips and methods to keeping china protected.

Especially during holidays and other festive times, fine china is brought out to mark the special occasion. However, when it's time to put the dinnerware away for another year, it can be a challenge to store it in a way that will keep it safe for years to come. It can become even more difficult when there is not adequate space available in cabinets. Here are solutions for careful china storage.

Storing China In A China Cabinet

If there is enough storage room in your kitchen or dining room cabinets, then safely storing fine china is straightforward. In this case, care needs to be taken to ensure that the plates and other china are not stacked too high. In addition, extra space or a "buffer zone" should be provided to ensure that the china is not chipped, scratched. or marred while they are being inserted or removed from the cabinet. To further protect plates and bowls, place felt of padded liners in between them.

China Storage Solutions When Space Is Limited

If kitchen cabinets or china cabinets are lacking storage, it may be best to pack the fine china in safe containers and store them in the basement, garage, closet, or pantry. It would be best to store them in specially made china storage containers, like padded china and stemware cases. There are large selections available to safely store different types of china. Here is an example of the china storage selection.

Choosing China Storage Containers

Since the selection of china storage containers is large, it can be daunting to choose the right one. Here are tips for picking the right storage solution:

  • Ensure the containers use quality materials specifically made for dishes like, micro fiber, cotton, or canvas. Avoid plastic as they quickly wear and usually do not offer enough protection.
  • Choosing a kit is a good solution if there are different types of matching sets in the china collection. A kit usually has containers for different sizes of individual plates, bowls, cups, accessories, and platters. Expansion kits are also available if the kit doesn't provide enough storage.
  • Make sure the kit has sheets of felt or cotton to lay between the dishes. If not, felt can be purchased at most craft stores.
  • Instead of using softer materials, use firmer boxes if the china is going to be transported or moved often.
  • If there are different sets being stored, choose containers that either have a label provided or an open view window. Sometimes holiday containers are available to make finding these rarely used china easy.

By storing the fine china right, either in a cabinet or elsewhere using china storage containers, these specialty plates, bowls, and other wares, can be enjoyed for years.
