When you are trying to get dressed for work, the bathroom may be the most important helps or hindrances in your routine. Most are shared by multiple persons, often requiring being ready to leave at the same time. Use these tips to simplify getting everyone out the door on schedule.
Bathroom Remodel
If doing a bath remodel is possible, check for the latest ideas at home improvement stores, many of which will have professional decorators on staff to assist you. Be sure you have planned as to what you want, as well as what you don’t want before you begin! Even if you aren’t one of the lucky few to do a complete remodel, take the time to look at some of the latest storage solutions and fixtures.
Home Storage of Medications
- Over-the-counter and prescription items should be stored in a cool, dark and dry area to preserve product integrity. Most experts advise against storing medicines in the damp climate of a bathroom. If these must be stored in this area, place them in a closed closet or shelf rather than in the medicine cabinet above the sink.
- Pill bottles are normally small and easily turned over or lost. Corral these in clear plastic bins with labels or baskets. If you have numerous medications, you could group like remedies in separate bins, i.e. prescription, pain relief, allergy, etc.
- Tiered kitchen spice racks meant to be placed in drawers are ideal for these, according to Mission Organization, a book based on the television series of the same name. When you open the drawer, all bottles are visible and stay put.
Organizing Bathroom Basics
These include shaving supplies, hair spray and accessories, manicure products, etc.
- The medicine cabinet is a good place for some of these. Depending on your household and available space, an example could be hair spray and accessories on one shelf, shaving needs on another.
- As always, use small plastic bins to corral smaller items, i.e. hair clips or pony-tail elastics, and keep them together in one place.
- A plastic rack hung on the wall or under-sink cabinet door would conveniently hold hair dryers and curling irons. There are many types and sizes available.
Organizing Make-Up Storage
Make-up, like medications, should be kept in a dry environment. If stored in the bathroom, a drawer or closed closet shelf could be utilized. There are many plastic organizers specifically designed for make-up, but try thinking out-of-the-box as well. The same tiered spice rack mentioned under Medications above works well for lipstick, nail polish, and other small bottles.

- Always remember to use vertical space which is often neglected.
- Use baskets or clear plastic bins to organize related items, especially in open shelves (see picture).
- Think about recycling containers meant for other purposes as storage.
- Keep counter top as clutter-free as possible to facilitate cleaning.
